Funding the 988 Lifeline

Since transitioning to the three-digit number in July 2022, the 988 Lifeline has received more than 19 million contacts, reflecting unprecedented demand for crisis support. Sustained funding is essential to ensure all help seekers receive timely, compassionate care.

The History of the 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline

Below is a brief history of key events leading to the launch and current iteration of the 988 Lifeline.

2005

The National Suicide Prevention Lifeline opened with the 1-800-273-TALK (8255). The hotline receives 46,000 calls in the first year.

2018

The National Suicide Hotline Improvement Act becomes law. It requires a feasibility study into designating a three-digit dialing code for a national suicide prevention and mental health crisis hotline system.

2020

The National Suicide Hotline Designation Act of 2020 becomes law. It requires the FCC to designate 988 as the universal number for a national suicide prevention and mental health crisis hotline.

2022

988 launches nationwide as the new easy to remember 3 digit number for suicide prevention and mental health.

2024

The FCC finalizes rules regarding georouting, a way of routing 988 calls to prioritize in-state answering and local support.

2025

Georouting launches for 988 texts as well as voice calls. As a web-based option, 988 chat already prioritizes local response.

Campus Lifeline Act
The Campus Lifeline Act would to expand awareness and access to the 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline by facilitating the inclusion of 988 on all student identification cards and elevate youth-led solutions through the Garrett Lee Smith grants.

Improving Mental Health Access for Students Act
The bill would require the 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline be listed, as well as the ability to add Crisis Text Line and a local or campus resource, on student identification cards and school websites.
